Under 6's (2006 - 2007)

This is the weekly update page for the Under 6 squad (School Year 1 boys and girls)

Many of the boys and girls who are in this squad came from the Club’s “Gimme 5s” Program (details on this Web site here)

The squad meets two times a week. Saturday mornings at Crossford Bridge Sports Ground from 10.30am through to 12 noon. Then Monday evenings at Ashton-on-Mersey High School Sports Hall, 6 until 7pm

For more information, contact the club by email here - U6's Manager

There is an emphasis on technique, installing good habits early and encouraging use of both feet. All sessions are planned by a UEFA ‘B’ Level 3 Licensed Coach and generally there is a coach to player ratio of 1 to 6. Only FA qualified coaching staff are used. In fact, every Sale United junior squad is led by FA qualified staff at either Level 1, 2 or 3.

With the Under sixes, over the season we will also be concentrating on friendly games of only 4 or 5-a-side to give these new ‘players’ the opportunity to have time on the ball, giving them confidence and an introduction to team play. This will prepare them for future years when, in full support of the FA strategy, the number of players in their team will increase in stages. They will not compete in 11-a-side teams until they move to High School.

Saturday 9th December
Training was not possible at Crossford Bridge today because the pitches were too wet. Some of our squad took part in the U7s Friendly Tournament at the JJB Soccer Dome. We had three very tough games against opposition who were older, bigger and stronger than us. We are making some mistakes in defence which is costing us some goals. This is something we can work on to improve. But there were some excellent goalkeeping performances from Nathan, Jack and Lewis. Also, two great goals were scored for us, one by Morgan and one by Jack after some good work by Oliver to force the chance. We were told that we can be proud of the way we played.

Saturday 2nd December
We learnt about the importance of finding space when our team has the ball, and then getting close to an opponent when their team has the ball.
We were told that there will be shooting practice soon, because in the games at the end shots were going wide of the goal.

Sunday 26th November
A very busy weekend saw some of our players taking part in the Under 7s competition at the JJB, and all our players involved in an early morning football festival at Ladybarn school, Cheadle on Sunday morning.

On Saturday seven of our players represented Sale United as the U7 Demons and after two games lost to narrow margins we secured our first win at 2 - 0. We musn't forget that the Demons are all a year younger than players in the opposition teams. Roll on next year when we really are Under 7s.

The rest of us trained with Sarah, Gareth, Jordan and Stewart at Crossford Bridge where a lot work was done on shooting, which probably helped us hit the back of the net so many times on Sunday.

On Sunday we had four squads playing against Ladybarn. The Aztecs won both of their games, the first one a narrow 1 - 0 win, but the second was won 5 - 0. The Beavers won one, lost one, the Chiefs drew both their games 1 - 1 and the Demons also won one and lost one. Because Ladybarn had five teams we mixed up some of our players who got a further two wins. So all in all we played 10 games, won 6, drew 2 and lost 2. We scored 28 goals conceeding 10. This was another great day for our development. A big thank you goes to the Ladybarn management team for allowing us to use their fabulous pitches and for organising such a good event.

Club Head Coach Stewart Heywood came to watch us on Sunday and was very pleased to see the football we played. A learning point is that we must always listen to the good advice that is given by our coaches. They are trying to teach us to become better players and if we listen we will always do better.

Saturday 18th November

Lots of exercises dealing with passing today. There is only one ball in a game, so its not a good idea for everyone to chase it. We can move the ball a lot quicker if we spread out into a good position for the kicker to pass the ball to us.

Saturday 11th November

Some of us were lucky enough to be chosen to play in an Under 7s festival at the JJB Soccer Dome. Good to see Dan coming back from University to help Stewart Jenkinson. Our Under 7s 'Demons' squad drew two matches and lost one 1-3. Hopefully we can do this again in a couple of weeks.

The rest of us trained at Crossford, with Gareth looking after one group and Sarah looking after the other. Lots of new exercises are helping our skills. There were some great matches at the end - even coach Jordan was showing us some of his own skills in one of the matches where there was a player short.

Saturday 4th November

Good training session today. Plenty of matches and its great when a goal is scored

Saturday 28th October

Because of the half-term break there were only 18 of us down today. Half of us did a shooting drill and the others did some ball control and were shown how to do a step-over followed by a shot on goal. The matches at the end were very close. At the end of training, the Chairman, Colin Dowdy, gave out red 'Sale United' sweatshirts to those who have not been given them before. We are going to need these during the next few months when the weather is cold.

Saturday 21st October

We did lots of passing exercises today. It is important to make sure you aim the pass towards the player and don't kick it too hard or too softly. We finished with some matches. At the end we formed two lines with the Under 9 squads and made one of the coaches, Sarah Rogerson, dribble a ball through the middle and score a goal to celebrate a birthday that has a "zero" at the end of it.

Saturday 14th October

Another new coach, Gareth, helped us today. Half of us did 'passing' and the other half did 'turning with the ball'. We then went into 4-a-side matches.

Saturday 7th October

A couple of new players joined us today and also a new coach called Justin. We started off the day using both feet to control the ball and looking up to see how many hands the two Stuart's had up. First player to shout out got the point. We then did a relay through the rope ladders followed by running with the ball and passing. We did the 'Circle Catch' game where the other team had to run round the circle as fast as they could to stop the 'catching' team getting a high score. After this we then split into four teams and each team had a couple of short matches. Going home time came too soon. T

Sunday 1st October

This last week we have spent a lot of time during our training sessions practicing for our first ever tournament against another Club, which was 4-a-side.

This morning we all got up very early to travel to Barnstormers FC based at a school in Cheadle. This is very close to Manchester Airport and there were planes flying low over us for most of the time we were there.

We were organised into four squads; Aztecs, Beavers, Chiefs and Demons. Two games were played at the same time leaving our two other teams to wait on the sidelines until it was our turn.

in the very first game it was a bit of a shock when Barnsormers took the lead against Sale United Azteks, but the boys did well to fight back and win the game 2 - 1. This spurred us all on and led to some very good games played by all four squads. In fact out of 10 games played we won 6 of them, drew three, and only losing one game by the narrowesrt of margins 1 - 2.

This was a fantastic experience for the 17 players who were able to make it. All games were played in a good spirit. The Barnstormers Manager has invited us back again in November to play in a similar tournament.

Saturday 23rd September

Two new helpers, Tom & Scott were with us today. After the warm up we did a "quick feet" exercise through the ladders and had a try at heading a ball thrown to us.
We did a simple passing game and then split into four teams and had two matches each to finish the practice.

Saturday 16th September

Stuart showed us a new game today and we had good fun playing games at the end of the session. On Monday we played "Slam" indoors for the very first time.

Saturday 9th September

This was already our eighth training session of the season and it has been good to see more and more children return to us after the small summer break, plus a few new ones.

Today we worked on passing and learned that it is important not to kick the ball too hard when passing it to a team-mate. We also learned that when making a short pass it is better to use the inside of our foot, a bit like a golf “putter”.

Towards the end of the session we split into four teams and played games against all of the other three teams. It was great to play in a team against the others. The Mums and Dads cheered when goals were scored.
